Here are a few points of information on our school…
How we are today…
St. Mary’s National School is a State primary school with a current enrolment of circa 500 pupils. (Jan 2020.) We follow a Catholic ethos within the Catholic parish of Ashbourne/Donaghmore in the Diocese of Meath.
We accept pupils from the age of 5 years in Junior Infants, up to the age of 12/13 years in 6th Class. Please see the enrolment policy under the “Policies” tab on the homepage.
St. Mary’s N.S. is co-educational, catering for the town of Ashbourne and surrounding areas. There are several primary schools in our town.
The language of instruction is English, with a strong commitment to the use of the Irish language and the promotion of our Irish cultural and sporting traditions.

In the beginning…
Founded in 1981, we moved to our current site in 1986, following the construction of a new school building. In 2012 our facilities were enhanced with the construction of a new two-storey 6-classroom block with resource rooms and a lift.
What we stand for…
The school aims to promote the spiritual, moral, social and educational welfare of our pupils through a wide and varied programme of activities and subjects across the curriculum and beyond. Bullying is not tolerated in our school.
Commitment to Best Practice…
Through the use of the most up-to-date teaching methodologies, we aim to provide our pupils with the skills they need to perform to the best of their ability in all areas of the primary curriculum.
We are a digital school…
As part of our commitment to education we integrate the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), throughout the curriculum from Junior Infants to Sixth Class. There is an interactive white-board in every classroom and we use the latest tablet technology on a daily basis. We achieved the Digital Schools Award in 2015. At present we are planning the roll-out of multi-touch screens to classrooms on a phased basis. We also have plans to purchase more tablets to further enhance teaching and learning.
There is a wide range of after-school activities available in our school, from sport, to chess, music, languages and ICT. Saint Mary’s is a Green School. We are justly proud of our beautiful campus, especially our football pitch!
As a result of Covid-19, our sporting and musical activities are severely curtailed in line with government guidelines. We hope to offer our wide range of activities when permitted to do so by the DES and the HSE.
Fostering a positive atmosphere…
We are a happy school with a positive, respectful and forward-looking atmosphere. Visitors always comment on the uplifting and cheerful attitude of staff and pupils alike. We are proud of our place in the local community and we foster many links with sporting and social groups within our parish.
There is an active Parents’ Association in our school. This association is affiliated to the National Parents’ Council (Primary).
Through close co-operation with the teaching staff and the Board Of Management, the P.A. contributes hugely to the life of the school. We cherish the positive relations between our parents and the staff.
The Principal is Mr Paul O’Connor.
Chairman of the Board Of Management is Mr Pat O’Connor.
Chairperson of the Parents’ Association is Ms Aoife O’Shea.
